What is the school’s approach to the teaching of Relationships and Sex Education?
In primary schools, the teaching of Relationships Education is compulsory. Relationships Education focuses on the teaching of the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults.
The teaching of Sex Education is not compulsory in primary schools. It is up to individual schools and academies to determine whether they need to cover any additional content on sex education to meet the needs of their pupils.
The approach at Longleaze School is to deliver Relationships and Sex Education through the SCARF scheme of work. SCARF stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship. This scheme of work meets all DfE requirements for statutory Relationships and Health Education and delivers a high quality, age-appropriate Sex Education curriculum. The school has consulted all of their stakeholders, including parents and carers, governors and staff members when making this decision.
When and how will Sex Education be delivered?
The school delivers the Sex Education strand of its PSHE curriculum in Term 4. Sex Education lessons are delivered to discrete year groups.
